Friday Finds March 14 2014

A few things I am loving this week….

1// I Am That Girl is an amazing project that promotes positive self-image, self-worth and connectedness amongst women worldwide – thousands of women have shared their stories of why their friends, sisters, mothers and themselves are That Girl, including one of our favorite do-gooders Sophia Bush. Take the pledge just in time for the new “I Am That Girl” book release!

2// Our girl Lupita has been setting records in the selfie department, sharing amazing snaps from Paris Fashion week with countless celebrities – including Pharell’s infamous hat :)

3// This week I’m loving Gaby’s tips for better living. We all need that reminder to eat well, exercise, get in a few good laughs and most of all catch more than enough zzz’s regularly in order to feel our best. What better time to focus on yourself than spring?

4// My uber talented pal Erin Gates revealed the cover of her first book this week on her blog, Elements of Style!  Best part is, the book is ready for preorder on Amazon, and is ALREADY the #1 Bestseller in their Home Decorating & Design category!  The book is loaded with design inspiration and will look SO gorgeous atop your coffee table or tucked on a book shelf – so go grab yourself a copy!

5// I don’t know about you but I can’t. stop. pinning. drink recipes that sound equal parts delicious and refreshing. Spring is right around the corner (I can just feel it) and who’s to say it’s too early for some Strawberry Thyme Lemonade? I plan to try this recipe at least once this weekend… and you should too!

Have an amazing weekend full of warm(er) weather!

Get the Look | Urban Vintage

This has got to be one of our most popular looks from our Fall 2013 photo shoot, and it is time to bring it back! I love mixing the perfect pieces from your closet into the ultimate urban-cool but still approachable look. The distressed denim and favorite vintage concert T-shirt are the perfect counterparts to the classic Cambridge Blazer in Magenta (now on sale!).  Add a pop of color in the form of a bright belt, flats, or bag and this look is next-level great. This look works just as well in this winter-to-spring transitional weather we are having as it did back in the fall – as soon as we know it we will be trading our distressed denim for cutoffs! #hurryupspring

Two Penny Blue has seen so much love recently! I wanted to share with you two recent features that we were so honored to be included in.

Our friends at CS Magazine here in Chicago featured Two Penny Blue as one of their “Best of What’s Next” in their January 2014 issue.  We are so honored to be included in this Chicago round up and would love for you to check out the feature right here.

CS Magazine Feature January 2014

The lovely ladies over at Lux & Concord were kind enough to interview me about the inspiration for launching Two Penny Blue, what it takes to start a fashion line, our commitment to manufacturing in the USA, and lots of other fun topics.  Lux & Concord is based in both Chicago and Boston (two places I’ve had the pleasure to call home) so I also got to share what I love about both cities.  I had a blast working with them and would love for you to read the full interview over here.

A Few of our Favorites | Five Best Beauty Products for Winter

It’s been REAL this winter in Chicago, yup as in -30 below kind of temps.  For the first time in my life, I’ve seen school closings without a drop of snow falling from the sky.  Since when is it too COLD to go to school?!  Well apparently since we’ve had the pleasure of not one, but several “polar vortexes” this lovely winter.  One of the many challenges of the winter months is keeping our skin healthy and hydrated through freezing outdoor temps and incredibly dry indoor air.  I’ve tried most – if not all-  of the products out there and have a round-up of the best of the best no-fail winter beauty products to keep you feeling healthy and hydrated till spring arrives.  Here are my top 5 :

Top 5 winter beauty favorites

1/  Leonor Greyl Hair oil:  We give our faces lots of love during the frigid winter months – but dry air and steaming hot showers do a number on our hair as well.  This oil from Parisienne company Leonore Greyl is the BEST and will have your mane soft and shiny in no time.

2/ L’occitane Shea Butter hand cream :  Can you tell I like French products?  I do.  This hand cream is perfection – effective – not too thick and greasy.  Perfect for sensitive skin too – keep a tube in your purse and you’ll be glad you did.

3/ La Mer Lip Balm:  Okay, $50 lip balm- I hear ya it sounds like a bit of overkill when you can just grab a tube of cherry chapstick for 99 cents at CVS.  Buuuuut – a little tiny bit goes a long, long way and you will have this little jar of goodness for months and months and months.  And it is truly the most luxe, high quality little pod of goodness- once you try it it will be hard to go back.  And seriously – who wants chapped lips?! No bueno.  As a reformed beauty product junkie I have adopted the same strategy in my medicine cabinet as I have in my closet – buy less and buy better.  No more clutter – just high qualtiy product that I love and that work.  This definitely falls in that category.

4/ La Roche-Posay Cicaplast :  I am pretty obsessed with La Roche-Posay – they offer such a high quality French product line as a killer price point (the line is usually available at CVS – so easy access to pick up your favorite products.)  This product has a cult following around the globe – any skin trouble spots and this little magic tube will fix em in an instant.  Dry elbows, cracked cuticles – a little bit of this and you will be all set!

5/ Thermal Water Spray :  I was skeptical at first – water in a can?! Really?!  Isn’t that a bit of a rip-off and sort of the same thing as splashing water in your face for FREE.  But after hearing lots of raves – this product is worth it’s weight in gold.  After washing up- spray all over your dry, clean face and then apply and lotions, moisturizers, or serums.  Something magical will happen, I promise.  Also, keep a can on your desk at work – it will refresh your makeup and feel so good as a pick me up for that dry office air.  And, they make small cans that are perfect for travel –  after an hour in a plane you will be SO glad when you can whip this can out for a mid-flight pick me up.

stay warm, friends.

Wise Words | Waiting

I read this quote the other day and it really hit home.  How many times do we hear and say …. I can’t wait to find the right guy, I can’t wait until he proposes, I can’t wait until we start a family, I can’t wait until I can afford a bigger place, I can’t wait until I get a raise , a promotion…  We are all guilty of it.  It seems everyone is waiting for the next thing down the line that will finally make them… well,  happy.  And sometimes we even get what we are hoping for and it still leaves us wanting for more.  A good reminder that happiness is an inside job – and today is a good day to get to work.  Sorry to get so deep on y’all , just had to share..

As fun as it is to see celebs red-carpet red afters hours and hours with their wardrobe stylists and glam squad – it’s almost more fun to see how they style themselves in real life when they are out and about running errands, grabbing lunch, etc.  Charlize Theron is always a fashion muse and I love how she styled herself for a casual daytime look in a streamlined black blazer, leather skinnies, a comfy gray tee, sunnies and a simple black bag.  Simple and chic – and of course she’s got her green juice in hand to complete the look.  Check out the outfit details below..

Pins of the Week

Well, it has been COLD in Chicago this winter, I mean -12 degrees, can’t be outside for more than a hot second, seriously consider moving to hawaii kind of cold.  All this chilly nonsense has me dreaming about spring and summer – bright colors, long sunny days, cocktails al fresco.  So it’s no surprise that this week we are pinning some lighter, brighter, sunnier images.  Enjoy!

And don’t forget to Pin with us over here.

Happy weekend, friends!

Style Muse | Karlie Kloss

Always in search of style inspiration, my current muse is the one and only Karlie Kloss.  She’s best known as a VS model, but what I really love is her own personal style.  It’s the perfect mix of effortless classic and updated moderns.  She loves a black leather jacket as much as she loves a classic trench; she recognizes the value of the perfect red lip and an impeccably tailored blazer.  So without further ado, some of the best-of’s from Ms. Kloss…

Style Muse | Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong’o.  Yup one glance at this look last Sunday night and I knew immediatley who was going to be the runaway favorite for Globes best dressed.  It’s perfection.  Bold color, perfect flattering silhouette, classic but still fashion forwrad with the cape, simple accessories, perfect makeup.  Many were shocked that this newcomer was the runaway fashion winner for the night, and some even wondered whether this dress could be a one hit wonder for Ms.  Nyong’o.  The truth is – Lupita has been killing it on the fashion scene for quite some time and this fashion muse is here to stay.  So that leads to a fun question – how does Lupita get it SO right, SO often?  Here’s what we can learn from Lupita.

First, this. BAM.

Okay, now onto the fashion rules according Lupita.

1/  Black and white are your friend.  Classic, contemporary, always chic.  So go ahead and wear them, ALOT.

2/ Highlight black and white with metallics.a_4x-vertical-1c52f2e75f702554602ec745936181ce1

3/ Don’t be afraid of pattern and pattern mixing.  The key to making it work is keeping the cut of the patterned pieces simple and minimal accessories.  Let the patterns shine and don’t make them compete.6e62316b12af94f721c4dd9c91de949d Lupita-Nyong’o-For-DuJour-Magazine-01

5/ Commit to adding more color to your wardrobe.  Color is your friend.  Figure our which colors work best with you skin/hair tone and stock up.  A simple silhouette such as a slip dress looks instantly chic when in a bold color.

6/ Keep the silhouette simple.  A  strapless jumpsuit, a sheath dress, a wrap dress – simple, unfussy silhouettes are the most flattering. enhanced-buzz-5801-1384199907-6

7/ And last but not least, it’s good to be pals with Anna Wintour.  REAL good.  Just sayin’ enhanced-buzz-10659-1384197130-24

Thanks for the inspo, Lupita.  Next up, can’t wait to see what you wear to the Oscars.
